Romance gets a bad press. Some people think this is due, if I may misquote Oscar Wilde, to the worst excesses of the Women's Movement. But knocking romance has been a sport for a lot longer than that. (I even confess to a personal weakness for P G Wodehouse's monstrous Romantic Novelist, Rosie M Banks.) Poor old Jane Austen had the same sort of problem, having to defend her characters for reading 'only a novel' in 'Northanger Abbey'.
So - confusion to the po-faced trouts who think we should all be reading books of sermons, or whatever the twenty-first century equivalent is! My two penn'orth is at Why Romance?
